Shetland's famous Up Helly Aa fire festival took place last week. It happens at the end of January to celebrate the start of the longer days.after a long winter. We can now look forward to the nights getting lighter. In June the sun barely sets and we experience the magical 'simmer dim', the summer light. The nights are so bright you can walk at midnight and there is still enough light to see otters, puffins and whoever else is in this landscape with us. We have availability

Yesterday this beautiful bearded seal visited us at the Outdoor Centre. They spent the morning at our marina. Bearded seals are a rare visitor to Shetland and it is amazing to see one up close. At 60 degrees North, Shetland summers see little darkness. Nights are lit by the 'simmer dim', the summer light, when the sun barely sets. People often think this means our winters are very dark.
